Rafael Nadal went a long way to securing his place at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Sunday as he won his ninth Roland Garros title.

The Spaniard is bidding to play at the season finale for the seventh time and has a 13-11 event record. He reached the final in London in 2010 (l. to Federer) and 2013 (l. to Djokovic).

Nadal currently leads the Emirates ATP Race To London and earns a further 2000 points with his victory at Roland Garros, which was his 14th major triumph.

The 28-year-old Nadal has a 41-6 record on the season, also winning the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid (d. Nishikori) and lifting the trophies in Doha and Rio de Janeiro in the first two months of the season.

The Mallorcan now travels to the Gerry Weber Open in Halle to begin his grass-court campaign, during which he will look to win a third Wimbledon crown. Nadal completed the Roland Garros-Wimbledon double in 2008 and 2010.

Beaten Roland Garros finalist, Novak Djokovic, also strongly pressed his claim for one of the coveted eight-man spots at The O2 from 9-16 November and is currently second in the Emirates ATP Race to London. The Serb is the defending champion in London, having lifted the trophy for the third time last year with victory over Nadal.

The Top 8 players at the end of the regular season will qualify for the season finale in London.
