Second seed Tomas Berdych met with stiff resistance against Adrian Mannarino, but persevered to overcome the Frenchman 7-6(2), 6-4 on Thursday in the third round of the Aegon Championships at The Queen’s Club.

The Czech was thwarted on 17 break points, before making his breakthrough at the 18th time of asking in the third game of the second set, having edged the first on a tie-break. He closed out victory in just over two hours.

The 28-year-old Berdych is coming off a quarter-final showing at Roland Garros (l. to Gulbis) and improved to a 32-9 match record on the season. He ended a 16-month title drought in Rotterdam (d. Cilic) in February and reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open (l. to Wawrinka).

Berdych goes on to face 10th seed Feliciano Lopez, who edged Kenny De Schepper 7-6(3), 6-7(4), 7-6(3) in two hours and seven minutes. The Spaniard withstood 24 aces, firing 15 of his own. Neither player was able to break serve. Berdych has a 4-4 FedEx ATP Head2Head record with Lopez, though this will be their first grass-court meeting.

Seventh seed Kevin Anderson held off Sergiy Stakhovsky in a third-set tie-break to prevail 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4) in just under two hours. The South African, who also reached the quarter-finals here last year (l. to Dimitrov), has a 22-11 match record on the season, reaching back-to-back finals in Delray Beach (l. to Cilic) and Acapulco (l. to Dimitrov).
