by ATP Staff|
World No. 282 Renzo Olivo is through to the quarter-finals on his ATP World Tour debut at the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad after stunning second seed Tommy Robredo 7-6(6), 6-3 in Wednesday’s second round.
The 22-year-old Argentine qualified into the main draw and claimed his first tour-level win when Paul-Henri Mathieu retired in their first-round clash. Olivo broke Robredo four times and saved six of the nine break points he faced to prevail in one hour and 37 minutes.
Former World No. 5 Robredo was coming off a fourth-round showing at Wimbledon (l. to Federer) and dropped to a 20-14 season record. The Spaniard lifted the Bastad trophy in 2006 (d. Davydenko) and 2008 (d. Berdych).
Fifth seed Joao Sousa reached his second quarter-final in three tournaments as he beat local wild card Elias Ymer 6-3, 7-5.
The Portuguese player was a semi-finalist at the Topshelf Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (l. to Becker) prior to Wimbledon and improved to a 15-21 match record on the season. Sousa saved five of the six break points he faced and won 71 per cent of his service points to beat the 18-year-old Ymer in 88 minutes.
The 25-year-old Sousa goes on to face Dusan Lajovic. The Serb was leading Jerzy Janowicz 6-3, 1-1 when the fourth seed was forced to retire with a left foot injury. Lajovic, at a career-high World No. 73 in the Emirates ATP Rankings this week, advanced to his first ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season.

Pablo Cuevas held on for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(2) victory over Swedish wild card Christian Lindell in two hours and 15 minutes. The Uruguayan advanced to his first ATP World Tour quarter-final in more than three years, since reaching the 2011 Oeiras semi-finals (l. to del Potro).
Top Seeds Battle Into QFs
Top seeds David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco battled through their opener, edging Rameez Junaid and Christopher Kas 6-7(5), 6-2, 12-10 in 86 minutes. The Spaniards, who triumphed at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals last year, are chasing their first title of the season.
Fourth seeds Johan Brunstrom and Nicholas Monroe also reached the quarter-finals, beating James Cluskey and Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6(5), 6-4 in 81 minutes. Sweden’s Brunstrom was runner-up in Bastad in 2008 (w/ Jean-Julien Rojer).
