Eighth seed Federico Delbonis cruised into the second round of the MercedesCup on Monday in Stuttgart with a 6-4, 6-1 win over fellow Argentine Juan Monaco. The 23-year-old Delbonis saved seven of the eight break points he faced as he claimed victory in 80 minutes.
Former World No. 10 Monaco was runner-up at this ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament two years ago (l. to Tipsarevic) and dropped to an 8-13 match record on the season.
The 23-year-old Delbonis snapped a run of three successive first-round losses, claiming his first win since reaching the Nice final in May (l. to Gulbis). The left-hander reached the semi-finals as a qualifier on his Stuttgart debut three years ago (l. to Ferrero).
Top seed and defending champion Fabio Fognini will open his campaign against Andrey Golubev after the Kazakhstani dismissed German wild card Philipp Petzschner 6-4, 6-1 in 80 minutes, breaking serve four times.
Leonardo Mayer earned a second-round clash with No. 2 seed Mikhail Youzhny after edging German wild card Michael Berrer 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). The Argentine is up to a career-high No. 47 in the Emirates ATP Rankings after reaching the Wimbledon fourth round (l. to Dimitrov) and is looking to reach his second ATP World Tour final of the season in Stuttgart. In February he finished runner-up on clay in Vina del Mar (l. to Fognini).
In the final round of qualifying, Philipp Davydenko (nephew of Nikolay Davydenko), Marco Cecchinato, Yann Marti and Mate Delic earned main draw berths.
Fourth Seeds Win Doubles Opener
Fourth seeds Mate Pavic and Andre Sa reached the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Robin Kern and Nicolas Reissig. The Croatian/Brazilian duo are coming off a third-round showing at Wimbledon (l. to Pospisil/Sock) and improved to a 6-3 team record.
