by ATP Staff|
Roberto Bautista Agut and Lukas Rosol will each be looking to lift their second ATP World Tour trophy on Sunday in the MercedesCup final. The pair will be contesting their first FedEx ATP Head2Head clash.
Third seed Bautista Agut knocked out top seed and defending champion Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-4 in 74 minutes on Saturday. The match was suspended due to rain for 40 minutes with Bautista Agut leading 4-1 in the first set.
"I had to play one of my best matches to beat Fognini here today," said Bautista Agut. "We both played really well in the second set. It was tough to close out the match but I concentrated and served well."
Last month, Bautista Agut beat Benjamin Becker for his first trophy at the Topshelf Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. He has a 31-15 match record on the season, after a victory over a player who is eight places higher at No. 15 in the Emirates ATP Rankings.
A couple of hours later, World No. 48 Rosol overcame second seed Youzhny, who won the 2002 Stuttgart title on his debut at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament, 7-6(3), 6-2. Earlier this year, he finished runner-up to Grigor Dimitrov in the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy final in Bucharest.
"It's a great crowd here in Stuttgart. It's a good tournament, so you never really have any easy matches from the first round," said Rosol. "I want to try and play even better tomorrow."
Stuttgart Doubles Final Set
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Philipp Oswald will play Mateusz Kowalczyk and Artem Sitak on Sunday in the doubles final. Garcia-Lopez and Oswald defeated German team Peter Gojowczyk and Dominik Meffert 7-5, 4-6, 10-8, while Kowalczyk and Sitak required just 49 minutes to beat German wild cards Michael Berrer and Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-0. Garcia-Lopez and Oswald won their first ATP World Tour team title in February at the Brasil Open 2014 (d. Cabal-Farah 15-13 in Match TB).
