The Frenchman prevailed 7-6(3), 7-6(5) in one hour and 44 minutes, after his opponent served 20 aces and saved all five break points faced. The 26-year-old Groth had reached his first ATP World Tour semi-final last week in Newport, and had broken into the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday.
"I stayed strong mentally and I think it was the key of the match," he said. "I played a good match because he's a tough opponent, especially here in Bogota."
Gasquet, making his Bogota debut this week, claimed his 20th match win of the season. He was playing his first match since the second round of Wimbledon, when he failed to convert nine match points in a loss to Nick Kyrgios.
The World No. 14 will next meet eighth seed Victor Estrella Burgos, the first player from the Dominican Republic to break into the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings.
The 33-year-old Estrella Burgos, who turned pro in 2002, dismissed Canadian Peter Polansky 6-4, 6-1 in 48 minutes to reach his first tour-level quarter-final.
Pospisil/Stepanek Win Opener
Vasek Pospisil, who claimed the Wimbledon doubles title two weeks ago with Jack Sock, made another winning partnership debut with Radek Stepanek. The top-seeded Canadian-Czech duo rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 win over Jonathan Erlich and Rajeev Ram, last week's Newport finalists.
