One day after becoming the youngest player in five years to win a match at an ATP World Tour 500 tournament, Alexander Zverev recorded another notable win on Wednesday in Hamburg.
The German wild card, who turned 17 on 20 April, knocked out World No. 19 Mikhail Youzhny, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours to reach the third round at the bet-at-home Open. It marked the first time a 17 year old had defeated a Top 20 opponent on the ATP World Tour since Richard Gasquet beat No. 11 Nicolas Massu in the Portugal Open first round in April 2004.
"I can't explain my emotions right now," Zverev said. "I don't know if I am dreaming. I am really happy with the way I am playing and I am really happy to have won against a player who has been in the Top 10. One or two points mattered in both sets. I played some great points at the right moments."
Zverev will look to reach the quarter-finals when he next faces 11th seed Santiago Giraldo, whom he practised with ahead of the tournament.
