Querrey, the No. 2 American at No. 61 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, three spots higher than Johnson, struck 20 aces in the one hour, 32-minute match.

The 26 year old is making his Atlanta debut, and is looking for another successful run during the North American hard-court swing. Five years ago, Querrey finished atop the Emirates Airline US Open Series Bonus Challenge standings, accumulating the most bonus points for his performance over the summer.

He will next face Israeli Dudi Sela, who took one hour to dismiss Atlanta's Donald Young 6-3, 6-0. Sela saved all three break points faced and converted five of his eight chances.

John Isner, who finished second in last year's Bonus Challenge standings behind Rafael Nadal, is the top seed and defending champion this week in Atlanta. He has committed to play at each stop of the Series. Read More

In doubles action, American wild cards Robby Ginepri and Ryan Harrison came back to defeat No. 4 seeds Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
