Fifth seed Federico Delbonis opened his Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad campaign with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dustin Brown on Monday. The Argentine converted four of his five break points for victory in 54 minutes at the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament.
The 23-year-old Delbonis is chasing his second ATP World Tour title, following victory on clay in Sao Paulo in February (d. Lorenzi), and improved to an 18-18 match record on the season.
Delbonis was joined in the second round by fellow Argentine Juan Monaco, who beat Victor Hanescu 6-4, 7-5. The Tandil native earned a clash with third seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez as he claimed his 10th win of the season. Monaco was a quarter-finalist on his Gstaad debut last year.
Playing his first match in 12 months, Viktor Troicki upset eighth seed Dominic Thiem 7-6(4), 6-4 in one hour and 35 minutes. The Serb is making his debut as a wild card in Gstaad.
"Today was a bit tough to play because I was kind of nervous and I didn't play my best game," said Troicki. "I didn't serve well, but I think I'm playing good and in the second round I think I can play even better and be more relaxed."
