Fifth seed Lukas Rosol survived a first-round scare on his debut at the Vegeta Croatia Open Umag on Tuesday, battling past Diego Sebastian Schwartzman 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2). The Czech served nine aces and broke serve four times as he claimed victory in just over two hours.

Eighth seed and three-time quarter-finalist Carlos Berlocq opened his campaign with a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory over qualifier Andrej Martin. The Argentine is chasing his second ATP World Tour title of the season, following victory in Oeiras (d. Berdych).

Home favourite and 2012 champion Marin Cilic will face Igor Sijsling in his opening second-round match after the Dutchman finished strongly to beat Julian Reister 7-6(2), 6-7(3), 6-2. Meanwhile, top seed Fabio Fognini will take on Spain's Albert Montanes, who denied teenage sensation Alexander Zverev another tournament run with a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Spaniard Pere Riba rallied to defeat another young gun, 21-year-old Jiri Vesely, coming back for a 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3 victory after two hours and five minutes. Albert Ramos-Vinolas joined his countrymen in the second round as he beat Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-5, 6-3.

Riba will next play Rosol, while Ramos-Vinolas faces fellow Spaniard and No. 2 seed Tommy Robredo, the defending champion.

Sixth seed Andreas Seppi finished strongly to see off fellow Italian Marco Cecchinato 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-1. Seppi has reached the semi-finals three times at this ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament, including last year (l. to Robredo). He is bidding to win his first ATP World Tour title since 2012.

Seppi goes on to face qualifier Pablo Cuevas, who came from a set down to beat Mate Delic 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in just over two hours. Another qualifier advanced when Horacio Zeballos defeated wild card Ante Pavic 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-1.

Teymuraz Gabashvili earned a meeting with fourth seed Joao Sousa after beating Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles, top seeds Julian Knowle and Oliver Marach defeated Aljaz Bedene and Jamie Delgado 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals. Knowle won the Umag title in 2002 with Frantisek Cermak.
