Second seed Tommy Robredo began his title defence at the Vegeta Croatia Open Umag with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Wednesday.

Robredo won 90 per cent of first serves and faced no break points during the 94-minute second-round contest, and will face another fellow Spaniard, Pablo Carreno Busta, for a place in the semi-finals. Carreno Busta secured safe passage when eighth-seeded Argentine Carlos Berlocq withdrew with a right hamstring injury.

The 32 year old is seeking his 13th ATP World Tour crown and first trophy since winning in the Umag championship match last year (d. Fognini). In his best result of 2014, the Hostalric native reached the Buenos Aires semi-finals in February (l. to Fognini). He also made the quarter-finals in Rio and reached the Wimbledon fourth round (l. to Federer).

Third seed Marin Cilic also opened his Umag bid, defeating Igor Sijsling 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday. The Croatian advanced in 68 minutes, striking 11 aces and winning 82 per cent of his service points.

The 25-year-old Cilic lifted the trophy at this ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament in 2012 with victory over Marcel Granollers and was runner-up in 2011 (l. to Dolgopolov). He is chasing his third ATP World Tour title of the season, following victories in Zagreb (d. Haas) and Delray Beach (d. Anderson).

In the quarter-finals, Cilic will face fifth seed Lukas Rosol, who finished strongly to beat Pere Riba 7-6(4), 6-1 in 74 minutes. Cilic takes a 2-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head lead into the contest, including a victory over Rosol this year in Rotterdam.
