David Goffin maintained his recent run of good form on Thursday as organisers of the bet-at-home Cup Kitzbühel attempted to play catch up after an extended period of wet weather. On Wednesday, only two matches were completed.
Wild card Goffin, who is currently No. 78 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, advanced to his first ATP World Tour quarter-final since October 2012 – at the Valencia Open 500 (l. to Melzer) – when he defeated top seed and 2012 runner-up Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-5. Goffin has won three straight ATP Challenger Tour titles this month.
He will next meet Paolo Lorenzi, who accounted for Pablo Andujar 6-2, 6-0 in 68 minutes to end the winning streak of last week’s Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad titlist (d. Monaco) in the second round.
Fourth seed Andreas Seppi takes on Juan Monaco in the last eight. Monaco led seventh seed Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 3-1 when rain started to fall again at 2:18 p.m. local time. Upon the resumption, Monaco wrapped up victory in 70 minutes. Seppi was granted a walkover when Pere Riba withdrew ahead of their match due to a viral infection.
World No. 50 Dominic Thiem won the battle of young stars Thursday, when the fifth seed beat No. 70-ranked Jiri Vesely 6-3, 7-6(3) in one hour and 35 minutes. He has reached the Kitzbühel quarter-finals for the second straight year. Last year, as the World No. 268 he lost to Albert Montanes. Thiem will face second seed and defending champion Marcel Granollers, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Diego Schwartzman.
The start of play Thursday was postponed by 75 minutes due to rain. Quarter-final matches are scheduled to be played later today, with the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament set to finish on Saturday.
