Steve Johnson toppled both John Isner and Ivo Karlovic at the Citi Open, en route to his fifth ATP World Tour quarter-final of the year. The former University of Southern California standout reveals the Last Time…

I cooked for myself or others
Right before I left for Atlanta, so a week and a half ago. I cooked breakfast every day and dinners for myself and my girlfriend. Usually I try to be the chef in the family. I'm a breakfast guy. I made pancakes, eggs and bacon. It was delicious.

I asked someone for their autograph
I think I asked Fed [Roger Federer] for his autograph a couple years ago. It's Fed. I got to hit with him and one of my buddies is a huge fan, so I asked him to sign something. He's such a nice guy and had no problem doing it.

I surfed
My girlfriend and I went out paddleboarding and surfing after Wimbledon and before Newport. Then there was a shark attack in Manhattan Beach, about 30 yards from where we were and we were there four days earlier. So that might be the last time I go in the water.

I shared a hotel room with another player
I shared an apartment this year in Australia and then in Maui with Denis Kudla. He's one of my closest friends on tour and we usually do a lot of stuff together when we travel.

I lost something important
I never lost a wallet, but I lost a phone in 2009 or 2010 when I was at USC. Not too long ago, so I'm keeping that record intact.

Being famous helped me
USC is a football campus, but I've gotten tickets to Lakers games and Dodgers games.

I drove myself to a tournament
Indian Wells. I drive every year from home in L.A.

I visited a country for the first time
I went to Germany and Holland for the first time this year. Halle and 's-Hertogenbosch. Loved both cities. We were there for the World Cup so it was cool to see their home countries go crazy.

I strung a racquet
Long time ago. College.
