Pospisil Topples Berdych To Reach Washington QFs

The World No. 36 upset top seed and wild card Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-4 in 81 minutes under the lights of the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center. The 24 year old broke his Czech opponent four times and won 68 per cent of points on serve.
The 13th-seeded Pospisil, who teamed with Jack Sock to claim the 2014 Wimbledon doubles crown earlier this month, goes on to face tenth seed Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, a 6-2, 6-0 winner Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic.

In other Thursday action, sixth seed Richard Gasquet eliminated American Tim Smyczek 6-3, 6-2 in their first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. The Frenchman will battle fourth seed Kei Nishikori, who took the decider in his 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 triumph over Slovakian Lukas Lacko. The Japanese No. 1 won his fourth and fifth ATP World Tour titles earlier this season, in Memphis (d. Karlovic) and Barcelona (d. Giraldo).
Seeds Fall In QFs
The pairing of Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau upset second seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 7-6(3), 6-2 in the Citi Open quarter-finals on Thursday evening. The Dutch-Romanian team, already four-time champions in 2014, will face Jonathan Erlich and Rajeev Ram in the semi-finals. Erlich and Ram advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over fourth seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo.
