by ATP Staff|
Second seeds and defending champions Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares ended Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau’s winning run Friday at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, advancing to the semi-finals with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory.
Rojer and Tecau had come into Toronto on the back of victory at the Citi Open in Washington (d. Groth/Paes), but were beaten in 82 minutes by Peya and Soares. The Austrian-Brazilian duo lifted the trophy 12 months ago in Montreal, defeating Colin Fleming and Andy Murray.
Peya and Soares are chasing their second ATP World Tour title of the season, following victory at The Queen’s Club (d. Murray/Peers) in June. They will face No. 3 seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in the semi-finals.

The Canadian-Serbian tandem rallied to edge Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 2-6, 6-3, 14-12 in 83 minutes on Friday. Nestor is seeking to reach his fourth final on home soil, having won the title on two occasions, including in 2008 alongside Zimonjic. The 38-year-old Zimonjic also triumphed in 2011 with Michael Llodra.
Saturday's other semi-final will feature fourth seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo against Marin Cilic and Santiago Gonzalez. Dodig and Melo overcame the all-Spanish duo of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. They will compete in a fifth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final and second of the year, having finished runner-up to Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in Monte-Carlo.
The Toronto doubles final will be shown live online on Sunday.
