Kei Nishikori won a late-night epic Tuesday morning for a place in the US Open quarter-finals, where he will meet Stan Wawrinka.

The 10th seed recorded a 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 7-5, 6-4 victory over fifth seed Milos Raonic in four hours and 19 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The pair’s fourth meeting ended at 2:26 a.m. local time Tuesday morning, tying the record for the latest finish at Flushing Meadows – venue of the final Grand Slam championship of the year.

It was also the finishing time for the matches between Philipp Kohlscheiber and John Isner in 2012 and Mats Wilander and Mikael Pernfors in 1993.

“It's going to bring confidence for sure for the next round,” said Nishikori. “[It was a] really tough five sets. [I’m] very happy to win today. I'll try to recover [for] tomorrow [versus Wawrinka]. Tomorrow is going to be very important.”

It was the 14th Top 10 match win of Nishikori’s career and first at the US Open since 2008, when he outlasted No. 4-ranked David Ferrer in five sets.  He is now 9-2 lifetime in five-set encounters.

Nishikori, who also advanced to the last eight at the 2012 Australian Open, is the first Japanese man to reach the US Open quarter-final since Zenzo Shimidzu in 1922.

Raonic, who hit 86 winners including 35 aces, drops to a 36-13 match record on the season.

Nishikori and Raonic are both pushing to clinch singles spots at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 9-16 November.

Nishikori started the tournament at No. 10 in the Emirates ATP Race To London, while Raonic is currently in sixth position.  Five places are up for grabs, after Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have already qualified.
