Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Sa, Soares, Kermode© RioOpen/FOTOJUMPATP Executive Chairman and President Chris Kermode presented Andre Sa and Bruno Soares the ATP ACES for Charity grant cheque.

Andre Sa and Bruno Soares were honoured at the Rio Open presented by Claro hdtv on Wednesday night for their charitable work with the WimBelemDon Project in Brazil.

The Brazilians were presented with a $15,000 grant from the ATP ACES For Charity program that will go towards the WimBelemDon Project. ATP Executive Chairman and President Chris Kermode was joined on Center Court by Tournament Director Luiz Carvalho and ATP CEO Americas Mark Young to present Sa and Soares the cheque.

Soares said, “This is a very important award, not for us, but for the project. We have been contributing to it for a long time now. Marcelo Ruschel works in Porto Alegre with kids from Belém Novo neighbourhood offering social inclusion, tennis, music, education. Keeping up with this project is a daily battle and costs are high. We know that sometimes he has spent his own money to support these children, so any kind of help is welcome. ATP has a fantastic programme and we are very happy to be part of the first Brazilian initiative to be awarded by the ATP ACES for Charity.”

Sa added, “The project’s goal is to grow. Every donation makes a difference for the kids. We had this idea last year together with André Silva, who used to work for ATP. We have all known Marcelo a long time, from Davis Cup, and we supported the project whenever we could. The intention now is to have some more media impact, for people to know about it and help, because the kids really need it."

The WimBelemDon Project, founded in 2000, has the motto of ‘Educating through Tennis’. Combining tennis lessons, educational workshops, English classes and psychological support in a safe environment, the WimBelemDon Project helps facilitate the development of skills, self-esteem and discipline of at-risk children in Porto Alegre to enable them to participate actively in Brazilian society. Sa and Soares have been actively involved with the project since 2010.
