Rafael Nadal
Charities and Causes
The Rafa Nadal Foundation was created in November 2007 and officially launched in February 2008 by the Spaniard and his family to help socially discriminated children and teenagers who run the risk of being excluded by society. The foundation works in conjunction with other charities and organisations to focus on three projects: Integration and Sport (a collaboration with Aldeas Infantiles SOS), More Than Tennis (in partnership with the Special Olympics) and the Anantapur Educational Centre in India (in conjunction with the Vicente Ferrer Foundation).
Highlights
In October 2010, Nadal travelled to India with his mother and foundation president, Ana Maria Parera, to visit the school that the foundation had assisted in building, which also has a tennis academy. The project offers opportunities and prospects to 150 girls and boys from the Anantapur district, considered one of the areas of greatest poverty in the country.
In December 2010 Nadal and Roger Federer came together to play a sell-out exhibition in Madrid to raise money for the foundation. Following the match in Madrid, the Rafa Nadal Foundation Gala Dinner was held, with Spanish singer Julio Iglesias flying into the capital city specially to perform.
A year later, the Rafa Nadal Foundation partnered with Invest For Children to host the Together For Integration event. Nadal was joined in a tennis exhibition by Richard Krajicek, Sergi Bruguera, Jordi Arrese and Emilio Sanchez Vicario, before the day finished with a dinner for 300 people at the Palau Nacional de Catalunya (MNAC).
In 2011, the Rafa Nadal Foundation was awarded a €10,000 grant from ATP ACES For Charity.
