Charities and Causes

The Roger Federer Foundation currently supports nine projects in Africa as it seeks to empower as many children as possible by further developing existing educational services and early support in a sustainable way. Among the beneficiaries is ActionAid Malawi, which launched a 10-year initiative with the Roger Federer Foundation in May 2011 to facilitate school entry for 54,000 children aged between four and six. In his native Switzerland, Federer's Foundation focusses on the promotion out-of-school of children affected by poverty and supports three projects: a:primo, Stiftung Schweizer Sporthilfe and Winter Aid Switzerland.

"Education enables children to take control of their future and actively shape it," declares Roger Federer. "In many countries of the world a majority of people, despite their efforts, do not have access to quality education. I am very glad to be able to make a difference by means of my Foundation.” The Roger Federer Foundation has the motto, “I Am Tomorrow’s Future” and seeks to give children living in poverty the chance to take control of their future by means of an education.

In December 2010 Federer joined forces with his great rival, Rafael Nadal, to play Match For Africa in Zurich, Switzerland, which raised $2.6 million for the foundation. In February that year, the Basel native had made an emotional visit to Ethiopia to see firsthand the work his foundation was carrying out. "My Mum being from South Africa is obviously the inspiration behind the foundation," he said. "I went there on vacation a lot when I was younger. So we started with a project in South Africa and, as I got older and got more money, I wanted to expand."

In 2012 the Roger Federer Foundation was awarded a €10,000 grant from ATP ACES for Charity.

Federer, in his capacity as President of the Roger Federer Foundation, and his mother Lynette visited the Hlukani and Govhu crèches in the Limpopo Province of South Africa in February 2013. They were given a warm reception by the children, parents, caregivers and official representatives from various authorities. The Roger Federer Foundation has partnered the locally organized READ Educational Trust since 2010.
