1997 -- Returned strongly from injury previous season to reach four finals... Became first Spanish man to reach Miami final (l. to Muster) and a finalist at Roland Garros where he defeated Chang (4th RD) and Rafter (SF) before losing to Kuerten in straight sets...Compiled a 22-13 record on hard, 20-8 on clay and 7-7 on carpet...

1998 -- Struggled and finished out of Top 100 for first time since rookie season in 1988...His best result was QF in his native Barcelona and in Mallorca...

1999 -- Played in only five tournaments (one ATP event) due to a right shoulder injury...Underwent arthroscopic right shoulder surgery on Jan. 29 and did not return until July...In August, reached final at Segovia Challenger (l. to Saulnier) and played his final tournament of year at end of month at Geneva Challenger where he reached QF...

2000 -- Returned to action in late February after shoulder surgery in 1999...Did not win a set in first three events in Mexico City, Santiago and Bogota...In April, reached his first ATP QF since October 1998 (Mallorca)...Two weeks later, advanced to 3rd RD in native Barcelona...Reached back-to-back finals in San Marino (l. to Calatrava) and won Sergovia Challenger on hard courts (d. Siemerink)...Closed season with SF in Palermo followed by QF in Hong Kong.

2001 -- The Spaniard finished in Top 100 in ATP Champions Race after compiling good results on clay...Struggled in early part of season with 2-4 record before reaching QF in Acapulco...Defeated fellow countrymen Portas and A.
