First Aussie man to win Wimbledon in 1987 since John Newcombe (in 1971). Member of the Australian Davis Cup team since 1982, leading his country to titles in 1983 and 1986. Went 6-0 in Davis Cup play in '86. Youngest champion ever at the Victorian Open in Melbourne when he won it in 1982 at 17 years, 6 months. The 1982 Wimbledon and U.S. Open Junior Champion (French Open Junior runner-up). Represented Australia at the 1984 Summer Olympics.

His father, Patrick Sr., is a lawyer and a former Australian rules footballer who handles his son's business matters. Cash cracked the top 10 in the fall of 1984 after taking Lendl to a 5th set tie-break at the U.S. Open semifinals, a match in which he had two match points. He dropped in the ATP rankings from 8 in 1984 to 67 the following year and Cash underwent an emergency appendectomy in London on June 2, 1986. He reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals (via wild card) only three weeks after surgery. He went from 413 to 99 following Wimbledon on the ATP computer, the biggest one-tournament jump of any player since the rankings began in 1973.

Qualified for his first Nabisco Masters in 1987 and went 1-2 in round-robin play. Won three tournaments (in five finals) in 1987, breaking a title drought since 1983. All three of his victories came away from Australia, the first time in his career. Finished in the top 20 for the second straight year at No. 20 in 1988 and compiled a 25-9 match record. Was injured most of the year with knee and achilles tendon (ankle) injuries. Played his last event in '88 at Cincinnati. Tore his achilles tendon in April 1989 in second round match vs. Bill Scanlon at the Japan Open. Underwent surgery in Australia shortly after.

Earned a career-high $565,934 in 1987 when he captured Wimbledon. Came back after surgery to win the Sydney/NSW doubles title with Mark Kratzmann in January 1990. Finished No. 368 on the ATP computer in 1989.
