Turned pro after the 1984 U.S. Open. He played at Clemson University
for one season, reaching the NCAA single final where he lost to Mikael Pern-
fors. He was named All-America that year and then turned pro.
A member of the USTA Junior Davis Cup team in 1983.
In his first full year in 1985, he reached three European claycourt
finals within one month. He was runner-up at Bari (l. Panatta), Marbella (l.
de la Pena) and Madrid (l. Maurer) from Apr. 21 to May 19. He finished No.
59 in his first full year before dropping to 174 in 1986.
Prefers clay courts to hard. Has played 45 of 53 matches on clay during
the last two years (1987-88). Only played 15 matches in 1987 due to knee and
shoulder injuries.
Compiled a 21-17 match record and earned a career-high $118,067 in 1988
while finishing a year-end best No. 58 on the ATP computer.
