David Felgate turned professional aged 20 in 1983, after capturing the under-18 singles and doubles titles at the British National Championships. He mainly played on the ATP Challenger Tour. He made two Grand Slam singles appearances in 1988 at the Australian Open (l. to Edwards) and Wimbledon, where he received a wild card and made a first round exit (l. to Lendl). He won one ATP doubles title (w/Shaw) at 1985 Bordeaux and four ATP Challenger Tour doubles titles (1986-Nairobi w/Fulwood, Lisbon w/Derlin, 1987-Bloemfontein w/Fulwood, 1988-Madeira-1 w/Fulwood). He was also runner-up at four ATP Challenger Tour events (1985-Messina w/Derlin, 1988-Madeira-2 w/Fulwood, 1989-Vilamoura w/Colombo and 1989-Troia Setubal w/Shaw). Felgate retired after 1989 Wimbledon and spent two years coaching in the United States. He worked as coach (and best man) to Tim Henman, ever since the long-time British No. 1 won the under-18 British title in 1992, until April 2001. He had helped Henman to seven ATP titles, the 1998-99 Wimbledon semi-finals and World No. 5. He went on to work with Xavier Malisse (April-December 2001), Naomi Cavaday (2007) and Nicole Vaidisova (2008). He was a European Players’ Representative on the ATP Board from 1998-2001. He was manager of Men’s National Training at the Lawn Tennis Association from 1992-1996. From May 2003 until May 2006 he was Performance Director for the LTA. He has also worked as a BBC radio analyst. He is married to Jan, who works for management company IMG, in London. The couple has two children, Jack and Alice. Bio: James Buddell – September 2009
