Israel's foremost athlete, Glickstein was the catalyst of the surge in
tennis interest in his homeland. Born the only son to Polish immigrant
parents, he began playing tennis at age 10. Soccer and basketball also held
his attention as a youth, but tennis prevailed, and in 1975 and '76 he
represented Israel in the Orange Bowl. His professional potential was
temporarily put aside when he was 18, as he served his compulsory three-year
stint in the Israeli Army, rising to the rank of sergeant. He was able to
maintain his skills during this period as, with the blessing and support of
his commanders, he worked out in his free time at the Israel Tennis Center.
He finally turned pro in April 1979, rapidly improving his ranking from the
high 200's to near 50. He won his first crown in 1980 and gained some inter-
national attention in June of that year when he beat Raul Ramirez at
Wimbledon and faced Bjorn Borg on Centre Court. A reserved, unassuming man,
Glickstein's placid demeanor hides a fierce competitiveness. Today he has
the support of his wife, who travels with him on the tour.
