Tim and twin brother Tom played collegiately at Northern Illinois University where they also lettered in basketball. After college they were both teaching pros, with Tim working in Dayton, Ohio. It was there that Hank Jungle, an accomplished player himself, spotted Tim's talent and urged him to give the pro tour a shot. His first experiences were in the satellites; then he had his big breakthrough in 1977, when he won three Grand Prix titles and reached a fourth final that was rained out. All this earned him the accolade of ATP Newcomer of the Year.

Tim's is a bullish, aggressive game, putting constant pressure on his opponent. He put sufficient pressure on John McEnroe at Wimbledon in 1979 to beat him in the Round of 16. The Gulliksons are identical twins, Tim being righthanded and Tom the lefty. When they first came together on the tour, the remarkable resemblance caused considerable confusion. After losing to each Gullikson in successive weeks, German Karl Meiler bemoaned the fact there was now a player on the tour capable of beating him with either hand. Qualified for Masters doubles 1983-84 (w/brother Tom).

Gullikson got into coaching after a successful career on tour, and was best known for working with Pete Sampras. The American won five major titles and attained the World No. 1 ranking under the tutelage of Gullikson. In January of 1995, Gullikson suffered a stroke while coaching Sampras at the Australian Open, later determined to be the result of brain tumors. He passed away on 3 May, 1996 after a courageous battle with brain cancer, and was survived by his wife Rosemary, son Erik, and daughter Megan. Tom subsequently founded the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation to assist brain tumor patients and their families.
