Became the first NCAA singles champion from Louisian State University in
1989, defeating Steven Jung of Nebraska 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 for the title. The
junior became the first non-senior to win the NCAA title since Mikael Pern-
fors won at Georgia in 1985.
Completed the 1988-89 season with a 42-10 match record, winning 23 of
his final 26 matches. He finished No. 3 in the final collegiate rankings and
earned All-America honors for the second straight year.
During his four year high school career at Brother Martin in New Orleans
he compiled a 62-2 match record at the No. 1 position. He ranked as high as
No. 6 in the 18-under polls and was a member of the USTA Junior Davis Cup
team, the first Louisiana player to make the team in its 30-year history.
