Enjoyed an outstanding junior career, losing to Rick Leach in the final of the 1983 USTA Boys' 18s Nationals. He won the 1984 USTA Boys' 18s National Grass Court Championships and the French Open Juniors (w/Jensen) that year. Won his first career Tour doubles title in 1984 (at age 17) with brother John as the two defeated Curren-Denton in the final of Richmond. A three-time singles All-American at Stanford (1986-88), helping the Cardinal to the NCAA team title in his senior year in '88. The younger brother of former top-ranked John McEnroe who also attended Stanford, Patrick helped Stanford to the NCAA team title in 1986 by winning three of four singles matches and two doubles wins.
In 1989, won his first Grand Slam doubles title (w/Grabb) at Roland Garros and the duo ended the year by winning the Masters title. In 1991, he advanced to his first Slam singles semi-final at the Australian Open and one month later, reached his first ATP Tour final in Chicago, where he lost to brother John in three sets. Compiled his best pro season in 1995 when he earned his first ATP Tour singles title in Sydney (d. Fromberg) and finished a year-end best No. 35 (after reaching a career-high No. 28 in September). Earned a career-high $609,093.
