Former British No. 1 Christopher “Buster” Mottram reached the fourth round at 1977 Roland Garros (l. to Panatta), 1980 US Open (l. to Kriek) and 1982 Wimbledon (l. to Mayotte). He was the first British player to rank inside the Top 100 as a teenager in 1974. He attained a career-high No. 15 singles ranking (7 February 1983). Mottram won two singles titles at 1975 Johannesburg-WCT (d. Okker) and 1976 Palma (d. Kuki), finishing runner-up at five other tournaments including 1977 Johannesburg-WCT (l. to Vilas), 1977-Murcia (l. to Higueras), 1977-Dayton (l. to Borowiak), 1978 Munich (l. to Vilas) and 1982 Hilversum (l. to Taroczy). Mottram also won five doubles titles at 1974-Charlotte (w/Ramirez), 1977-Basel (w/Cox), 1977-Kitzbuhel (w/Taylor), 1981-Stuttgart Indoor (w/Saviano) and 1982-Bournemoth (w/McNamee) from 11 finals. He represented Great Britain in 19 Davis Cup ties, amassing a 31-10 record (27-8 in singles). He was a part of the 1978 final squad (w/John Lloyd, David Lloyd and Mark Cox) versus United States in Rancho Mirage, California. Arguable his finest hour came in September 1979, when he beat Italian favourite Adriano Panatta 6-0, 6-4, 6-4 on Davis Cup duty at the Foro Italico in Rome. Having flirted with politics, Mottram now divides his time between tennis, bridge and croquet. As a junior, Mottram showed early promise winning 1973 Roland Garros title and finishing runner-up at 1972 Wimbledon (l. to Borg). His father, Tony, was a leading British player in the late 1940s and 1950s. Bio: James Buddell - September 2009
