Played in the longest set of 1988 (and career) when he defeated Marty
Davis 16-14 in the fifth set at Wimbledon.
Played one of the most memorable matches in recent years as he lost to
Boris Becker 16 67 63 76 63 in four hours, 27 minutes, after having two match
points in the fourth set.
Captured his first career singles title at New Haven on Aug. 19, 1990,
defeating Todd Woodbridge 63 63 in the final. En route, had wins over seeded
players Mayotte (2nd RD), van Rensburg (QF) and Chesnokov (SF).
Enjoyed his best season in 1991 when he compiled a 39-24 match record,
earned a career-high $399,729 and finished a year-end best No. 13 on the ATP
Tour computer. Also surpassed $1 million in career prize money and posted
five wins over top 10-ranked players.
Reached finals in Orlando and Tokyo-indoor in '91. Had wins over Sampras
and Connors in Orlando and later beat the two at Wimbledon. In Tokyo, upset
top 10s Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl before losing to Edberg in three sets.
