Year-by-Year Highlights:
1987- Runner-up at Rye Brook, N.Y. (l. Lundgren); Quarterfinalist at Hong
Kong; Doubles Quarterfinalist at Indianapolis (w/Tarr).
1985- Doubles Semifinalist at Boston (w/Willenborg).
Had one of the most unusual experiences a player will ever encounter as
he qualified for the 1987 U.S. Open while still playing in the Rye Brook
tournament. He commuted back-and-forth to Flushing for his qualifying match
and then back for his semifinal at Rye Brook. He lost to Peter Lundgren 6-7,
7-5, 6-3 in the final but qualified later that day for the U.S. Open.
He drew Mats Wilander in the first round, but shortly after improved his
ATP ranking by over 100 places. He then reached the quarterfinals at Hong
Kong, knocking off No. 2 seed Slobodan Zivojinovic along the way.
He played collegiately at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where
he was a Dean's List student. He was a three-time All-America in 1984-85-86
and was a member of the USTA Junior Davis Cup team in 1984-85. Played with
current pro Richey Reneberg at SMU.
In 1984 he was awarded the Colonel James H. Bishop award, given to the
JDC team member who displays the best character, conduct, sportsmanship, on
and off the court, as well as for tennis accomplishment.
After ending his collegiate career at SMU, he came back to work on his
business degree, which he received in May 1987.
Earned a career-high $38,646 in 1987.
Hampered by knee problems most of 1989, compiling only a 2-6 match
record while finishing No. 418 on the ATP computer.
