The Dutchman helped his country to Davis Cup SF by posting a 4-0 singles mark during season...Began season with five-set victory over countryman Schalken in 1st RD at Australian Open (l. to Grosjean in 2nd RD)...His best ATP result was SF in February in Copenhagen where he lost to eventual champion Henman...In 1st RD Davis Cup, defeated Spain's Balcells in dead rubber and in QF, beat Germany's Kiefer in four sets and Prinosil in dead rubber..Best clay result was QF in St. Poelten (l. to eventual winner Gaudenzi)...In June, advanced to 3rd RD at Queen's (l. to Sampras) but then lost three straight 1st RD matches on grass...Did not play a hard court match leading into US Open where he lost in 2nd RD to Clement...Beat France's Santoro in dead rubber in SF tie...Finished season playing four Challengers and reached QF in Bratislava...Went 6-6 on hard, 4-0 on carpet, 4-7 on clay and 2-4 on grass...In doubles, advanced to three SF with as many partners.
