The second-youngest player (behind Djokovic) to finish in year-end Top 20...After starting off with a 12-14 match record, since mid-June to rest of season compiled a 28-11 mark...Highlights included Nottingham QF (l. to Seppi), 4th RD at Wimbledon (d. No. 5 Roddick, l. to Baghdatis), SF in Newport (l. to Gimelstob), his third career ATP final in Washington (l. to Clement), SF at AMS Toronto (l. to Gasquet) and QF at AMS Cincinnati (d. No. 1 Federer, l. to Roddick)...Was one of only two players (Nadal) during year to defeat Federer and ended his 55-match winning streak in North America...
Then advanced to 4th RD at US Open (d. No. 11 Gonzalez, l. to Davydenko)...His best results after Open were 3rd RD at AMS Madrid (d. No. 3 Davydenko, l. to Ljubicic) and followed with 4th RD at Australian Open (l. to Nadal in five sets)...In February, defended his first ATP title in San Jose (d. No. 4 Roddick in SF, Karlovic in F) and next week reached SF in Memphis (l. to Roddick)...In March, turned in back-to-back SF showings at ATP Masters Series tournaments in Indian Wells (d. Finished rest of season with an impressive 16-4 mark...Led Great Britain back into 2008 Davis Cup World Group by winning both of his singles matches vs. Croatia in playoff tie, including a five-sets win over Main Cilic in opening rubber...During five-week European indoor circuit, reached final in Metz (l. to Robredo), 2nd RD in Moscow (l. to Tipsarevic), 3rd RD at AMS Madrid (l. to Nadal), captured title in St. Petersburg (d. 2008-- compiled his best season by winning a career-high five ATP titles and reaching his first Grand Slam final...Became first British player to win five titles in a year in Open Era and first Briton to appear in a Grand Slam final since Greg Rusedski at US Open in 1997...He's on course to become first British player to finish in Top 4 in 36-year history of ATP Rankings...Jumped off to a 10-1 start with titles in two of his first three tournaments in Doha (d. The Scottish native captured an ATP World Tour-best six titles and reached a career-high No. 2 ranking after winning his fourth career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Montreal…It was second straight year he won at least five titles…He reached QFs or better in 13 of 17 tournaments and posted a 12-5 mark against Top 10 opponents...He began season by defending his title in Doha with back-to-back wins over No. 2 Federer (SF) and No. 8 Roddick (F)...Held serve 47 of 50 games throughout tournament...Then followed with a fourth round showing at Australian Open where he lost to Fernando Verdasco in five sets...In February, he defeated World No. 1 Nadal in three sets in Rotterdam final to capture his 10th career ATP World Tour title...Two weeks later advanced to QF in Dubai where he withdrew due to a virus...Also pulled out of first round Davis Cup European zone home tie against Ukraine…He returned in March to reach final at BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, falling to Nadal…En route to title match, he beat No. 15 Robredo in fourth round and No. 2 Federer in SF for fourth consecutive time since losing to Swiss in ’08 US Open final…Followed by capturing his third title of season at Sony Ericsson Open in Miami over No. 3 Novak Djokovic…He became first British player in tournament's 25-year history to win title…In his season clay court debut, he reached his first career SF on clay at Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, defeating No. 9 Davydenko in QF before losing to eventual champ Nadal…He suffered his earliest loss of season in opening round (after a bye) to Argentine qualifier Juan Monaco in Rome…Came back to reach QFs in Madrid, losing to No. 5 del Potro...Followed with career-best QF run at Roland Garros, losing to Fernando Gonzalez in four sets...Then began his grass court campaign at Queen's by capturing his first title on surface with win over James Blake in final...Became first British player since Bunny Austin in 1938 to earn title at Queen's Club...Did not drop a set and only lost serve twice in tournament...Continued strong grass-court form into Wimbledon, where he defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets to reach his first semi-final at All England Club before losing in four sets to Andy Roddick...He became ninth different British male to reach semi-finals since abolishment of Challenge Round in 1922...The Scot returned to action at Rogers Cup in Montreal, where he defeated three Top 10 players (No. 8 Davydenko, No. 7 Tsonga, No. 6 del Potro) to win his fourth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy…Afterwards rose to a career-high No. 2 on Aug. 17 and was there for four weeks …He is highest-ranked British player in ATP history (since 1973) and first player to break Federer-Nadal stronghold on top two spots since Lleyton Hewitt ranked No. 2 on July 18, 2005...Followed with SF in Cincinnati, losing to eventual champion Federer…At US Open, made a fourth round exit to No. 16 seed Marin Cilic...Then played in Davis Cup tie vs. Poland, winning both singles rubbers in 3-2 loss in World Group playoff tie…He re-aggravated a left wrist injury during weekend tie and withdrew from Asian tournaments in Tokyo and Shanghai…He returned to action in November in Valencia and captured his career-best sixth title, defeating Russian Mikhail Youzhny in final…He became first British man to win 14 titles in Open Era, surpassing Greg Rusedski (13)…He also won two titles as a Canadian…Following week at BNP Paribas Masters in Paris defeated James Blake in third set tie-break before losing in third round to Radek Stepanek.
