Began playing at age five...Father, Rui, is a director of an insurance company; Mother, Carlota, is a mathematics teacher...Has one younger sister, Ana, who is studying communications at university... Enjoys computers, video games, internet, gadgets and golf... Idol growing up was Andre Agassi... During junior career, won title in Bolivia and reached two finals in his home country in 2002...Following year, won junior title in Argentina and Portugal while reaching final in Brazil...In last junior tournament, reached QF at Orange Bowl...Finished No. 10 in world junior rankings in '03...Has a 18-13 career record in Davis Cup play (11-8 in singles) in 13 ties...Considers hard his favorite surface...Coached by countryman and former ATP pro Joao Cunha de Silva.

2004 -- Appeared in three Futures doubles finals, titling at Portugal #3 (w/Mota)

2005 -- Won three Futures titles, at Portugal #1 and #3 (d. Granollers-Pujol at both) and Venezuela #5. Doubles finalist at Bogota Challenger (w/Melo) and Portugal #3 Futures

2006 -- In May, made ATP debut in Estoril as a wild card and reached QF (d. Luque, Tursunov; l. to eventual champion Nalbandian). Captured first Challenger title in June at Sassuolo (d. Fraile). Also won two Futures titles in three finals. In doubles, won Futures title at Portugal #3. Runner-up at Milan Challenger (w/Viloca) and three other Futures events.

2007 -- The Portuguese No. 1 finished in Top 150 for first time...Began season in Davis Cup play against Georgia (l. to Chikhladze) in February. Fell to Benneteau in Casablanca first round before reaching Estoril 2nd RD, with lone ATP win over Ramirez Hidalgo (l. to Gasquet). Went 1-5 at ATP-level and 0-2 in doubles. On Challenger circuit, won Seville title (d. Andujar) to rise to career-high No. 135 in ATP Rankings in September. Finished doubles runner-up four times in Karlsruhe (w/Berrer), Furth (w/Fognini), Manerbio (w/Martin) and Bogota (w/Norman).
