Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles were the third team to clinch their place at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, where they will make their second straight appearance (1-2 record) at the circuit finale.
2009 Review
The veteran duo captured one title and reached three finals together during the season with runner-up efforts at the Australian (l. to Bryans) and US Opens (l. to Dlouhy-Paes).
In April at Barcelona, they defeated the Bryans in the SF before falling to Nestor-Zimonjic in final. On grass, they advanced to QF at Wimbledon (l. to Moodie-Norman in five sets) and in August they dropped only one set in four matches en route to title at Rogers Cup in Montreal. They beat Nestor-Zimonjic in SF and Mirnyi-A. Ram in final.
In final Grand Slam tournament at US Open, they won four of five matches in straight sets en route to title match, only to lose to Dlouhy-Paes in three sets. They played in two tournaments after US Open, highlighted by semi-final at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Shanghai (l. to Benneteau-Tsonga).
Finals History
Bhupathi and Knowles compiled a 1-2 record at the 2008 season climax in Shanghai and failed to progress past the round-robin group stage.
Knowles, 38, will be appearing for the 12 time. He made his debut in 1995 and has played nine times overall (also 1996-98, 2003-2007) with former long-time partner Daniel Nestor. The duo captured the 2007 title (d. Aspelin-Knowle), having finished runner-up in 1998 (l. to Eltingh-Haarhuis) and 2006 (l. to Bjorkman-Mirnyi). In 2002 he reached the semi-finals with Brian MacPhie.
Played at UCLA from 1990-92 and earned All-American honors in singles and doubles in 1991. Member of Davis Cup team since 1989 (41-32 career record, 23-25 in singles) in 29 ties. Has held annual charity event in Nassau benefiting local charities last three years. ATP Player Council member from 2002-04 and served as Vice President. Hobbies include golf, spearfishing and free diving. Named ATP Doubles Team of Year in 2002 & 2004 (w/Nestor). 1999 -- His six-year doubles title streak ended. In singles, won San Antonio Challenger (d. Caratti).
2000 -- Won two doubles titles. Lost in doubles QF at Sydney Olympics (w/Merklein).
2001 -- Won three ATP titles.
2002 -- Finished as No. 1 duo, winning six titles (w/Nestor). Overall, won a career-high seven titles in 14 finals and personal-best 71 matches. Reached final in three Slams, winning at Australian Open. Earned a career-high $709,149.
2003 -- With Nestor, won an ATP-best six titles to finish as No. 3 as a team. Reached SF at Tennis Masters Cup in Houston.
2004 -- Finished No. 1 (w/Nestor). Qualified for Tennis Masters Cup and reached SF. Won US Open and two AMS titles. Surpassed 300 wins as a team.
2005 -- Won four titles (w/Nestor).
2006 -- Claimed five ATP titles in eight finals to finish No. 3 in Race (w/Nestor). Won AMS Indian Wells, Delray Beach, Barcelona, AMS Rome, and Basel. Finalists at Tennis Masters Cup, Marseille, Dubai, AMS Hamburg.
2007 -- Captured his first Roland Garros title and finished at No. 2 in Stanford ATP Doubles Race (w/Nestor). Reached finals in Sydney, Marseille and Houston and SF at Australian Open, AMS Rome, Doha and Dubai. Along with Roland Garros crown, followed with title at Queen's (d. Bryan-Bryan). Reached 600 career match wins with 2nd RD win at US Open. Qualified for fifth straight Tennis Masters Cup, also his 10th career circuit finale. Reached Basel final (w/Blake). Closed with title at Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai (w/Nestor). His 47 doubles titles ranks him third among active players (behind Bjorkman & Nestor). With Nestor, compiled a career finals record of 40-29 and won at least one title together in 13 of past 14 years. Finished No. 4 individually in ATP Doubles Rankings.
2008 -- The Bahamian teamed with Mahesh Bhupathi to finish No. 4 in ATP Doubles Race with a 37-19 record together. Has won at least 40 matches for eight consecutive years. Began with SF at Australian Open. Won back-to-back titles in Memphis (d. Ratiwatana-Ratiwatana) and Dubai (d. Damm-Vizner). Beginning at Memphis, they won 14 of 16 matches ending with runner-up finish at AMS Miami (l. to Bryans). Reached final at AMS Monte-Carlo (l. to Nadal-Robredo) but did not win another match until AMS Toronto (QF). Followed with SF at AMS Cincinnati and reached final in New Haven (l. to Melo-Sa). Made strong year-end finish with SF exit in Vienna, runner-up at AMS Madrid and title in Basel. Became fourth active player and 21st player in ATP history (since 1973) to win 50 ATP doubles titles. Qualified for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai and went 1-2 in round robin play.
