Began playing at age five and nicknamed Lipper and Lip...Only child in family...Mother, Gail, is a pyschologist; father, Marc, passed away in 2001...Grandfather, Jack Sherry, was No. 2 in world in table tennis and played with Shah of Iran during World War II...Compiled an outstanding collegiate career at Stanford University from 1999-2003, earning All-American honors three times...Member of NCAA team champions in 2000 and reached NCAA doubles final in 2002 (w/D. Martin) and SF in '01 and '03...Favorite surface is hard courts and considers serve his best shot...Idol growing up was Pete Sampras...A big fan of New York Mets in baseball and New York Jets in football...Married Marie on July 17, 2010 in Laguna Beach, CA, and best man was long-time partner and former college teammate David Martin...Coached by former ATP pro Scott McCain (since May 2006).

2011 -- The American only won one match in his first three tournaments, but hit form at the end of January by winning the Singapore Challenger title with David Martin...In the following two weeks, partnering R. Ram, he reached the final in Johannesburg (l. to Cerretani-Shamasdin) and won the title in San Jose (d. Falla-Malisse)... The pair united again a week later to triumph in Delray Beach (d. Kas-Peya) and also won at a Challenger event in Dallas (d. Brown-Phau) the following week...Won his third Challenger title of the season in April in Athens (w/Fleming) and the following week, playing with Santiago Gonzalez for the first time, won his sixth career ATP World Tour title at the Barcelona...They defeated Melzer-Zimonjic and Mirnyi-Nestor to reach the final before saving four match points to beat Bryans in the title match 5-7, 6-2, 12-10...Afterwards rose to a career-high World No. 33...

2013

With S. Gonzalez, reached ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells SFs (l. to Bryans)…On 5 May, the duo won their fourth ATP World Tour team title with Gonzalez with 10-7 Match TB win over Qureshi-Rojer in Oeiras final; Improved to 9-7 in title matches…Also won 2009 Oeiras title (w/Butorac)…Beat defending champions Granollers-M. Lopez in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome QFs, fell in SFs (l. to Bhupathi-Bopanna)…
