All-American at USC, won the NCAA doubles title in 1975.
In October of 1981, he was diagnosed as having testicular cancer, and
subsequently underwent two operations, 6 months of chemotherapy and a 30
pound weight loss. He played at the ATP Championships in August of 1982, and
fully came back in 1983. He established foundations to aid cancer patients,
and runs a tennis event with fellow pros with proceeds going to the
foundation.
He enjoyed his best results in 1984 with Bernard Mitton.
Walts is still feared for cranking up an awesome serve--all the more so
when he hurls his 6'4" frame fully into it.
