Asian Tennis Has Roots In Land Of Rising Sun

The Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships is the longest-running ATP World Tour tennis tournament in Asia, first held in 1973. A combined ATP World Tour and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event, it is played at Ariake Colosseum, which is an enormous tennis centre consisting of 48 tennis courts and a stadium with one of the first retractable roofs in tennis.

Czech Makes QF Exit - Tomas Berdych lifted the 2008 title (d. del Potro), his first ATP World Tour title on Asian soil, but made a quarter-final exit to Mikhail Youzhny this year.

Hewitt's Terrific Record - Lleyton Hewitt, who fell in the semi-finals to Mikhail Youzhny, captured the 2001 title (d. Kratochvil). The Australian has always reached at least the quarter-finals in four visits to the Japanese capital.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga strongly boosted his campaign to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals by clinching his third ATP World Tour title of the season. The second seed cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mikhail Youzhny in the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships final. The No. 1 Frenchman is the sixth player this year to win three or more ATP World Tour titles.
