Legg Mason Tennis Classic Welcomes New Era

The Legg Mason Tennis Classic presented by GEICO at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park celebrates a new era in 2009 as the tournament becomes a prestigious ATP World Tour 500 event. The tournament will nearly triple the prize money offered ($500,000 to $1.4m) and the winner will receive 500 rankings points, up from 175.

Roddick Reaches Milestone - Andy Roddick may have been denied a fourth Washington crown, but the American reached a career milestone in the third round as he recorded his 500th tour-level victory.

Isner Comes Close - The American returned to the scene of his maiden final and defeated No. 3 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga en route to the semi-finals – where he lost out to Roddick in a repeat of the 2007 final.

Gonzalez Denied Second Title Bid - The fourth seed, who finished runner-up to Tim Henman in 2003, was denied a second chance to claim the Washington title as he was beaten by del Potro in the semi-finals.

The eagerly anticipated final between top seed Andy Roddick and defending champion Juan Martin del Potro did not disappoint in Washington, D.C., as second seed del Potro successfully defended his Legg Mason Tennis Classic title with a thrilling 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(6) victory over the American. Del Potro is the first back-to-back champion in the U.S. capital since Andre Agassi won consecutive titles in 1998-’99.
