Winston-Salem Makes Successful ATP World Tour Debut

The first two editions of the Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University in 2011 celebrated the crowning of North Carolina-native John Isner as the singles champion. The 48-draw ATP World Tour 250 tournament, held in the week before the US Open, takes place in a newly designed state-of-the-art tennis facility to host both professional and collegiate tennis events. The Winston-Salem Open is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series.

Tsonga Edged Out - Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga returned from a freak injury to reach the semi-finals on his Winston-Salem debut. The Frenchman did not drop a set in his first three matches before falling to Isner.

Roddick Surprised - Former World No. 1 Andy Roddick edged James Blake in his first match, but then suffered a surprise defeat to Steve Darcis. "Make no mistake, I wanted to play better here," he admitted.

Berdych Denied - Tomas Berdych dropped to a 7-8 finals record after squandering three match points in the tie-break. "I made it pretty successful," said the Czech, "but still one I was missing, so it will take some time."

Isner Retains Title
American John Isner successfully defended his Winston-Salem Open title, saving three championship points before defeating second-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(9). Afterwards, both Isner and Berdych were flown to New York for the US Open on a private jet provided by a tournament sponsor.
