ATP ACES For Charity: Horia Tecau

Tecau aims to raise literacy levels in his home country of Romania

Charities and Causes
The Fundatia Curtea Veche contributes to children’s wellbeing by improving their education, specifically in reading. Promoting reading as a fun, spare-time activity, the association organises interactive workshops and enables children from underprivileged backgrounds to gain access to books through book clubs and donations. The ATP ACES for Charity grant will support a book donation campaign involving Tecau's book: 'Viata in ritm de tenis', which in English is ‘Life in the Rhythm of Tennis’. The book is about how kids learn about the importance of key values such as honesty, teamwork, fair play, adherence to rules, respect for themselves and others. It also provides a guide for young people to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and losing.

The grant will also be used to fund visits to 10 Romanian cities where children can learn new skills or improve on existing ones with support from a strong sporting infrastructure. Through reading Tecau’s book, participating in special events and listening to motivational speeches, 5,000 children will benefit from countless memorable moments, while the foundation will generally raise awareness of the importance of both reading and sports.

Horia Tecau was honoured with the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award in the 2017 ATP World Tour Awards presented by Moët & Chandon for his efforts in championing children’s rights and education in Romania.

"I wasn’t expecting it. Not many people know about the efforts and the actions I’ve been doing outside the court," Tecau said. ""The little help that you’re doing can make a difference in that’s child’s life and it’s very pleasing and rewarding that you can help those kids just the way you were helped at some point."
