All-American at SMU in 1982/83. Southwest Conference singles champion 1982/83. He did post an impressive win over Guillermo Vilas at the ATP Championships in Cincinnati...Harmon turned professional in June 1983 after a most impressive college career at both Tennessee and SMU...Rodney was actually urged to go pro in 1982, after he showed his tremendous talent enroute to the US Open quarterfinals, the only African-American man to do so besides Arthur Ashe...He decided to finish his schooling, however, earning a communications degree from SMU...Harmon's raw athleticism is a delight to spectators, as is his easygoing, pleasant manner on court...His all-court game is best suited to fast surfaces...Following his playing days, he was the men's tennis coach at the University of Miami and a USTA National Coach before serving as USTA Director of Multicultural Development...Named Director of Men's Tennis for USTA High Performance in 2002.
