Father, Helmut, is a school teacher; mother, Gaby, real estate secretary. Younger sister, Elizabeth, 12, is among the best players in her age group in Austria. Finished high school in 1992 and is doing a course to become a salesman. Favorite surfaces are hard and grass and a serve-and-volleyer. Enjoys basketball, soccer and reading. The Austrian 16s champion in 1992 and reached the semifinals at the Italian Open juniors in 1994. Turned pro in 1994. Coached by Gotthard Schaerf. In his first career ATP Tour outing in St. Polten in June 1994, defeated Tomas Nydahl and Dinu Pescariu before losing to eventual winner Thomas Muster 7-5, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
