Basic Soars In ATP Rankings, Mover Of The Week
No. 77 Mirza Basic, +52
The 26-year-old won his first ATP World Tour title at the Diema Xtra Sofia Open, defeating fellow first-time finalist Marius Copil in the championship match to make his Top 100 debut. Basic toppled fourth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round and top seed Stan Wawrinka in the semi-finals. After becoming just the second player from Bosnia and Herzegovina to win an ATP World Tour title, after Damir Dzumhur, Basic rises 52 places to a career-high No. 77 in the latest edition of the ATP Rankings.
No. 75 Marius Copil, +19
The Romanian reached his first ATP World Tour final at the Diema Xtra Sofia Open, before falling in three sets to Basic. The 27-year-old did not drop a set heading into the final, beating No. 3 seed Gilles Muller in the quarter-finals and No. 5 seed Robin Haase in the first round. Copil rises to a career-best No. 74, moving up 19 spots.
No. 76 Roberto Carballes Baena, +31
Carballes Baena upset the odds, winning six matches in seven days from qualifying, to win his first ATP World Tour title at the Ecuador Open in Quito. The 24-year-old became the second qualifier and second first-time winner of the day after Basic’s success in Sofia. The Spaniard defeated three seeded players to win the title in Quito, including a win over compatriot Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the final and soars 31 positions to a career-high No. 76.
No. 96 Thiago Monteiro, +22
The 23-year-old reached the semi-finals at the Ecuador Open in Quito, before narrowly missing out on a place in the final after a three-set loss to second seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The Rio de Janeiro resident defeated No. 3 seed Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals and No. 5 seed Horacio Zeballos in the first round. The Brazilian re-enters the Top 100 for the first time since 16 July 2017 at No. 96, climbing 22 places.
