ATP ACES For Charity: Nick Kyrgios
Charities & Causes
The NK Foundation strives to increase access to, and provide sport facilities to underprivileged & disadvantaged youths, with a dream that every child's dream to play sport is fulfilled.
Nick Kyrgios: "A couple of years ago I had a vision: to build a facility for disadvantaged and underprivileged kids where they could hang out, be safe and feel like they were part of a family. There'd be tennis courts and basketball courts and a gym and an oval to kick a footy. There'd be things to eat and beds to sleep in...
"When I am in Australia it is my intention to be hands on in my facility, running camps, playing with the youth and getting behind our cause.
"We are currently in the process of scoping out land in Melbourne and looking for organizations and businesses to partner us. This dream is going to become a reality."
On 3 January 2018, NK Foundation was awarded an ATP ACES for Charity grant worth $15,000 for 2018.
Kyrgios spent time after practice sessions throughout the 2018 Australian Open hitting balls with children who are battling disease or those who are family members supporting their sick loved ones. Before playing third seed Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round, the Australian met with a nine-year-old named Bella, a leukaemia patient who has undergone two bone marrow transplants.
"Today was special!" Kyrgios wrote on Facebook before playing Dimitrov. "I was so humbled to know that all she has asked for every day since the Australian Open started was for her ball to be signed by me... today she got much more and I hope that it fills her with hope, strength and inspiration for the road ahead!"
"It's much bigger than tennis for Nick," NK Foundation CEO Christos Kyrgios told 7 Tennis. "Something that's always been really important to him is making a difference to kids that don't have the access and the ability to basically play tennis or their sport that they don't want to get involved in because of whatever restricting factors that may be."
