Eurosport: Djokovic ‘15 Athlete Of The Year
World No. 1 beats out Messi, Curry in viewers poll
Eurosport fans have crowned World No. 1 Novak Djokovic as their Athlete of the Year for 2015. The Serbian received a massive 28.6 per cent of over 300,000 votes from international sports fans on Eurosport.com’s websites.
The Serb’s stellar year included three of four Grand Slam titles, as well as his fourth straight win at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. He finished as the year-end No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings for the fourth time in five years.
FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi was second in the vote with 17.9 per cent, followed by NBA sensation Steph Curry (16.5%), Rugby World Cup-winner Dan Carter (12.9%) and sprinter Usain Bolt (10.7%). Alpine skier Anna Fenninger, F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, Serena Williams, swimming sensation Katie Ledecky and golfer Jordan Spieth rounded out the top 10.
Eurosport’s commentators and producers have also selected athletes who they believe are poised for major career breakthroughs in 2016, a list that includes ATP World Tour young gun Andrey Rublev.
