Kubot/Melo Celebrate Sydney Title With Dance Lesson
Welcome to the 2018 ATP World Tour doubles season, which is starting a lot like the 2017 ATP World Tour doubles season. At least that's the case for the co-No. 1 players in the ATP Doubles Rankings, Marcelo Melo of Brazil and Poland's Lukasz Kubot.
The duo won their first title of the season on Friday, beating Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff and Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-3, 6-4 at the Sydney International. Kubot/Melo saved both break points they faced and won 77 per cent of their service points.
“It was great. I think we played very good in the final, as we have been playing in the tournament. We, for sure, are very happy to start the year with a title here in Sydney,” Melo said.
The team is now 9-4 in finals. Kubot improves to 21-14; Melo, 29-23. The pair won an astonishing six titles in 2017, including three at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level (Miami, Madrid, Paris).
“We are pleased and happy that we had a couple of matches here in Sydney, because the weather is always tricky. Now we have time to change and go to Melbourne,” Kubot said.
“We are ready for that. We have three matches behind. Every level of the matches was, every time we played better and better, so that gives us a little bit confidence in the beginning of the year and we are happy to be there.”
