Estrella Burgos Battles Into Quito Final
Defending champion to face Lorenzi in championship match
Two-time defending champion Victor Estrella Burgos is one match away from a three-peat at the Ecuador Open, fighting through a tight semi-final against fourth seed Thomaz Bellucci 7-6(4), 7-6(3).
Up 5-2 in the opening set, Estrella Burgos squandered two chances to serve for the opener, but he regrouped by racing through the tie-break to grab a commanding lead. Both players traded routine service holds throughout the second set, but the Dominican Republican player raced through the final four points of the match to prevail in two hours and four minutes.
The World No. 156 in the Emirates ATP Rankings improves to 14-0 in Quito. He also boosts his FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Bellucci to 3-0, with all three wins coming in Quito. Estrella Burgos defeated Bellucci in the 2015 semi-finals and 2016 championship match.
Awaiting Estrella Burgos in the title match is third seed Paolo Lorenzi, who continued his outstanding form in Quito with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win over second seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
The Italian dropped just seven points in racing to a 5-0 lead in the opening set. Although Ramos-Vinolas gained his footing as the match wore on, Lorenzi remained in control of the baseline rallies. He broke the Spaniard at 4-4 in the second set and comfortably held in the next game to wrap up the contest in 72 minutes.
Lorenzi improves his FedEx ATP Head2Head record over Ramos-Vinolas to 2-1. He is now into his third ATP World Tour singles final (1-1), having prevailed in his most recent championship match this past July in Kitzbuhel (d. Basilashvili).
