World No. 1 Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan avoided a string of first round upsets Wednesday at Roland Garros, prevailing 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 against Santiago Giraldo and Pere Riba. The Americans broke serve six times, winning 48 per cent of their return points.

Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut ousted No. 6 seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in a final set tie-break, edging the Poles 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3). Benneteau and Mahut won 69 per cent of their service points to take the match in two hours and 12 minutes.

Americans Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram knocked out seventh seeds Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach 6-4, 7-6(5) in one hour and 33 minutes, while Alexandr Dolgopolov and Xavier Malisse converted four of nine break point opportunities to beat No. 12 seeds Mark Knowles and Michal Mertinak 6-2, 7-6(3) in 81 minutes.

Just under 24 hours after John Isner took Rafael Nadal to five sets in his singles opener, Isner and his fellow American Sam Querrey lost to Italians Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(6) in just over two hours. The No. 15 seeds paid the price for not being able to convert 11 break point opportunities.

Ninth seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau, who reached the Wimbledon final last year, dropped four points on first serve and hit seven aces to defeat James Cerretani and Adil Shamasdin 6-4, 6-3 in 73 minutes.

Despite hitting six double faults, Brazilian No. 11 seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares overcame Americans Michael Russell and Ryan Sweeting 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
