World No. 12 Gilles Simon secured his place in the Brisbane International semi-finals on Thursday as he defeated Santiago Giraldo 7-6(2), 6-4. The second-seeded Frenchman was broken twice, but converted three of his eight break points to claim victory in one hour and 48 minutes.
The 27-year-old Simon won two ATP World Tour titles last season, lifting trophies at the Apia International Sydney (d. Troicki) and the bet-at-home Open - German Tennis Championships 2012 in Hamburg (d. Almagro). He is bidding to win his 10th career title this week on his second visit to Brisbane.
Simon will aim to reach the final when he takes on Alexandr Dolgopolov on Saturday.
The No. 3 seed knocked out 2009 champion Radek Stepanek 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance.
The Ukranian won 59 per cent of his second serve return points, breaking the sixth-seeded Stepanek five times. He wrapped up the two hour and 16 minute victory on his second match point against the Czech’s serve.
Dolgopolov, holding a career high South African Airways ATP Ranking at No. 15, is seeking to win his second title after triumphing at the ATP Studena Croatia Open in Umag (d. Cilic).
