SONY OPEN TENNIS 2014
Ferrer Sweeps Into Third Round; Gasquet To Face Anderson
by ATP Staff|
Fourth seed David Ferrer started his campaign for the Sony Open Tennis title on Friday with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Teymuraz Gabashvili in 79 minutes. Playing for the first time since 27 February, it was his 10th hard-court match win of the season.
Ferrer failed to convert one match point versus Andy Murray in last year’s Miami final. He will next face No. 31 seed Andreas Seppi, who battled past Radek Stepanek 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 53 minutes.
Ninth seed Richard Gasquet will attempt to extend his 3-1 record against Kevin Anderson, the No. 17 seed, in the third round. Gasquet converted three of his 13 break point opportunities against Alejandro Gonzalez in a 7-6(7), 6-4 victory in two hours.
Anderson maintained his run of form by beating Horacio Zeballos for the third time in a row, 6-4, 6-3 in 65 minutes. Anderson struck eight aces and won 30 of his 33 first service points. The in-form South African reached his third ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final at last week’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells (l. to Federer) and has finished as the runner-up in two ATP World Tour finals this season (Delray Beach and Acapulco).
Grigor Dimitrov, the No. 15 seed, fired 12 aces past Albert Montanes and won 46 of his 48 first service points to triumph, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3, in one hour and 41 minutes. He recently won his second ATP World Tour title at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel (d. Anderson).
Dimitrov will get a rematch with 20th-seed Kei Nishikori in the third round after the Japanese upended Marinko Matosevic 6-4, 6-1. In their only previous meeting, at the 2013 Shanghai Rolex Masters, Nishikori defeated the Bulgarian in straight sets.
